Strategic Family Therapy

Family Therapy is particularly indicated in the presence of emotional or behavioral problems of children and adolescents in the family. Because children are part of the family system, it has been demonstrated by empirical research that working with the entire system (the family) is what facilitates positive change.

The Strategic Family Therapy approach combines elements of attachment based family therapy with structural interventions. Important elements of this model include identifying what gets in the way for children and caregivers to communicate effectively their needs and emotions and understanding how each member of the family perceives the problems and strengths in the family and one another. Another key aspect of the model is the use of techniques to make structural changes in the family and ensure that rules, boundaries, freedom and responsibilities are balanced effectively.
