Besides some good progress in the last decade in regards to civil rights for LGBTQ+ people and a more open public debate around sexual orientation and gender identity, the LGBTQ+ community still faces issues that are unique to this sector of the population. These range from a negative self-identity that originates from shame-based upbringings, and the internalization of homonegative messages from family members, peers, and the larger society; to institutionalized forms of prejudice such as discrimination in housing, job positions, and health benefits; to more specific issues such as coming out, relationship with the family of origin, trauma, living with HIV, same-sex relationships, dating, sex, aging, and isolation.
If you have been experiencing emotional or physical distress due to any of these concerns, talking with an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist might benefit you. I will listen to your story and help you construct a more positive and empowering narrative for yourself if that is what you need. Or I will help you heal your shame and fears for social connections or romantic relationships. Whatever issue you are facing, we will work together on what is most important to you in a compassionate, respectful, and collaborative manner.
