Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a structured approach to couples therapy that was developed in the 1980's by Sue Johnson. Over 20 years of empirical research show that it leads to significant improvement in a vast number of couples.

EFT is primarily based on attachment theory, the idea that the emotional health of a person is directly connected to positive emotional connections and attunement with other people. For instance, in a relationship partners need to feel safe and trust one another; know that the other is present and committed to the relationship; and that they can turn to their partner for practical and emotional support. In fact, one of the main goals of EFT is to foster the creation of a secure bond between partners.

In addition, EFT includes structural systemic interventions in order to create a shift in the partners problematic cycles of interaction such as pursue-withdraw or criticize-defend, and initiate new more adaptive cycles.
